Pictures of Blue Birds at Rockefeller State Park Preserve
This gallery features pictures of eastern bluebirds, tree swallows, and bluejays found at Rockefeller State Park Preserve. While northern cardinals are my favorite birds to photograph, eastern bluebirds are a close second. I’ve had the best luck capturing bluebirds on the Farm Meadow trail, Pocantico River Trail, Canter Alley, and on the west side of Swan Lake. While some bluebirds will winter over at the park, tree swallows are migratory, and you will find most of them during Spring migration. If you find a bluebird nesting box, you’ll typically find tree swallows nesting nearby. Bluejays can be found at the park year-round; their loud cries sometimes seem that they are the only birds in an area.
One interesting spring-time ritual involves bluebirds and tree swallows deciding who gets which nesting box. Bluebirds hang around in trees near the nesting boxes, and if a tree swallow lands on “their” box, the bluebirds quickly swoop in and chase it away. This makes for great pictures as the birds fly around the nesting boxes. You’ll find photos of this in the gallery.
